Designs from Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook resemble a Chinese abacus (suanpan). By one reckoning, Apple’s red-beaded design displays the number 108 and Emojipedia's, 12,031,981.

Abacus was approved as part of Unicode 11.0 in 2018 and added to Emoji 11.0 in 2018.
